Media-ethiek is een vorm van toegepaste ethiek waarbij de gebeurtenissen en probleemsituaties die zich voordoen in de media geanalyseerd en beoordeeld worden aan de hand van morele basisprincipes. In dit boek gaat het dus niet over meta-ethiek (waar komen ethische principes vandaan?) of descriptieve ethiek (waarom handelen mensen op moreel vlak op deze of gene manier?), maar over de manier waarop de media al dan niet ethisch correct handelen. Onder media verstaat de auteur alle middelen tot communicatie als dragers van informatie, zowel gedrukte media (kranten, tijdschriften, boeken, pamfletten, fotografie, enz.), gesproken media (radio, televisie, film, enz.) als nieuwe media (internet, interactieve telefonie, sociale netwerksites, enz.) en hybride media (combinaties van de gedrukte, gesproken en nieuwe media). Dit handboek is gericht op de houding van personen die dergelijke media gebruiken, niet op de media als zodanig.

This book draws a connection between ethics and research across social sciences, philosophy, medical sciences and legal sciences, and demonstrates that any research activity needs to be conducted by means of rules deriving from the field of ethics. Although having a common core, such rules assume different characteristics depending on the branch of science, as the contributions on philosophy, medicine, dentistry, law, biotechnology, robotics and architecture highlight. It also investigates the more complex ethical concerns and places them in a larger, technological context. Starting with an introduction to common-sense ethical principles, the contributions then guide the reader, helping them develop and understand a comprehensive knowledge on the field. Notably, it appeared interesting to analyze recent events related to the arrival of the Sars-CoV-2 pandemic in light of ethical principles, highlighting in what terms their applicability can still be confirmed. Moreover, the book makes these topics accessible to a non-expert audience, while also offering alternative reading pathways to inspire more specialized readers.

Op 1 oktober 2012 trad professor Michel Magits toe tot het emeritaat. Hij heeft zich in zijn carrière onderscheiden door zijn grote inzet voor onderwijs, onderzoek en beleid van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel en van haar Faculteit Recht en Criminologie. Hij was vicerector en decaan, gaf de colleges ‘Historische inleiding tot het recht’ en 'Moderne Staten', en hij verzorgde rechtshistorische publicaties. Hij publiceerde verder bijdragen en artikels over administratief, sociaal en socialezekerheidsrecht. Ook werkte hij rond het niet-confessioneel onderwijs, de organisatie van levensbeschouwingen en euthanasie. Zijn maatschappelijke engagement, in de humanistisch-vrijzinnige beweging, ging steeds gepaard met de academische gedrevenheid die hem kenmerkt. De vakgroep Interdisciplinaire studies van het recht (JURI) wenst haar coryfee met het boek Een leven van inzet. Liber amicorum Michel Magits te danken. Het boek bundelt bijdragen die de onderzoeksinteresses van de gevierde aanraken: ze betreffen thema's als religie, vrijzinnigheid, onderwijs, bestuursrecht, socialezekerheidsrecht en andere, die vaak vanuit een rechtshistorische invalshoek werden onderzocht.
